And herein lies the danger. The danger of becoming hooked on gadgets and focusing all your attention, your knowledge and ultimately your money towards acquiring new gadgets, finding out about them and so on. And if we are being completely and utterly honest, most people are in no particular need for the vast majority of gadgets. For instance, for most of us, it is enough that we have cell phones which can be used to communicate with people and that can take basic pictures that might come in handy in real life situations. Everything else is fluff and pomp. Of course, all of this can be quite alluring and that is where gadgets really shine.

The manufacturers and the advertisers can very successfully convince people that they cannot live without the latest gadget that does something in 0.005 microseconds less than the previous model or that the very advanced option that was to start with completely useless is now obsolete and that you need more. Young people are particularly susceptible to this, both because they actually believe they need these gadgets and also because there is that peer pressure that makes them feel inadequate and worthless unless they have the same gadgets as their friends.

The most important thing that you should always keep in mind is that gadgets can be useful and they can be fun. If they are fun, do not mistake it for usefulness and do not start thinking how you cannot live without them. It makes no sense and you will find yourself wishing for and spending more and more money on gadgets that you do not need at all. If they are fun, they are fun.

First of all, it is absolutely essential that you know what you actually want from a certain gadget. If you are looking for something that will help you organize your daily schedule better and that will remind you of your responsibilities, do not start looking for stuff that will provide you with additional clutter that will only make the gadget less useful. It is quite easy to get side-tracked when browsing gadgets and it is of paramount importance that you have this cleared up in your head before you start buying.

The next thing that you will want to do is look for the gadgets that will fit the purpose and that will suit your needs the best. These days, this is done on the internet which will provide you with so many choices and so many different gadgets that you will not know where to turn. Luckily, it is also very easy to focus and narrow down your search so that you are looking only at those gadgets that are of actual interest to you.

Of course, mere reading of advertisements and descriptions of gadgets is not enough. Everyone will say that their gadget is the best thing around. This is where you need to look for actual reviews by real people. You can find these very easily and they will let you know how good the gadgets actually are. If there are solitary negative reviews, do not get swayed as there are always people who like to complain.

Pickle picker is yet another of these kitchen gadgets that is a complete exercise in futility and pointlessness (is that a word?). Namely, what it is is basically a fork that someone is charging you extra for because it is supposed to have a unique purpose. I am surprised that there are no more useless gadgets like this one that are basically one thing and that are advertised as something completely unique.

Spoon rest is something that you will actually see in peoples’ kitchens and the only thing that comes to my mind when I see something like that is really? Are you really that paranoid about the cleanliness of your counters and also your spoons that you cannot tolerate the spoon touching the counter for a few moments? Also, isn’t it equally as efficient if you take a small saucer and rest your spoon there?

Pasta makers sound like the best idea out of all the kitchen gadgets. However, there is a very good reason why pasta is bought already made and that is the fact that it is so difficult and so complicated to make your own pasta that you soon start thinking about eating your fingers instead.

The first thing that comes to mind when we are talking about workout gadgets is something that you can use to play music as you are working out. Without music, you are either left alone with your own thoughts, which is something some people find not really that appetizing, or you are left with the sounds of the city you are running through or finally, which is the first option, you are left to the choice of music that you get in gyms and that can only be described as brain cell-devastating. This s why you will want to get some sort of a gadget that will allow you to listen to exactly the music you want to listen to. It also enhances your performance.

Today, we are also seeing more and more advanced gadgets that can monitor your performance in ways that were once impossible to even imagine. For instance, the biggest advancements are in the field of gadgets used by runners and joggers. With these gadgets, you can find out exactly how much distance you covered, how many steps you have taken. What your heartbeat was during your run and much, much more. This not only makes your runs more efficient as you can see how you performed, but it can also make things much more interesting. For instance, certain gadgets will include mini-games that will spur you on to run even further and even more strenuously the next time you go out.

If you are looking to lose weight with your exercising, a good, high quality scale would also come in handy. It will allow you to precisely monitor your weight, including your BMI, allowing you to see how much weight you have lost and whether you are hitting your targets.

Of course, this is just scratching the surface and there are many cooler workout gadgets out there that will help you really get involved and perform to the best of your capabilities.

The coolest gadget of them all, and I am not entirely sure that it can really be called a gadget is the Delorean from the Back to the Future movies. Any kid that has seen any of the Back to the Future movies will tell you that their biggest wish was to take a ride in that ultra-cool gadget of a car. Sure, there have been innumerable time-traveling machines and gadgets in the movie history, but none of them have ever been cooler than the Delorean Michael J. Fox and his crazy professor buddy use to get to the past or the future, depending on their needs. It’s not just its ability to travel in time, but also the flux capacitor of course, as well as the car itself, the cool 80s car and there haven’t been that many really. The ultimate movie gadget.

Of course, one other gadget that I simply cannot forget to mention, once again fretting that it may not entirely fall into the category of gadgets are the lightsabers from the Star Wars movies and all other media outputs that have been bombarding us since times immemorial. When I said that it is possible lightsabers do not fall into the category of gadgets, I thought about the fact that they are actually weapons. However, if we are being lax with our categorization, lightsabers are really gadgets, as in that every kid that has ever seen a Star Wars movie has copied that sound waving a stick around, or something a bit more advanced than a stick, depending on how much they nagged their parents to get them some lightsaber replicas.

Batman movies have always been a source of innumerable gadgets, from the subdued but very cool gadgets in the first two and the last two movies to the over-the-top and outright silly gadgets from the movies in the middle that we would all like to forget – Batman has always been a source for a real gadget aficionado. The formula is quite simple. Think of any sort of a weapon or a gadget that might come in handy, but the prefix Bat- in front of it and you have a Batman gadget. Really simple and somehow really attractive.

Another movie franchise that has been very rich in gadgets is also the James Bond franchise. From the very beginnings to the newest Bond movies, you could always rely on Her Majesty’s favorite secret agent to introduce some new and insanely cool gadgets, such as jet packs, knives in boots and all kinds of gadgets for the Aston Martin that Bond always drove around. In fact, there is even a character called Q who came up with the gadgets in every movie and who became the part of the Bond franchise as much as martinis and Walter PPKs.

I would also like to mention a few gadgets from one of my favorite movies of all times – Blade Runner. First, there is that machine which is able to analyze photographs in a way that you can discover new stuff about the scene that surrounded the actual situation that was photographed. With Harrison Ford drinking Johnnie Walker and using it to analyze some pics, it was one of the coolest things ever. There is also the Voight-Kampff machine that Ford used to seek out replicants. I cannot really think of a use for it in today’s world, but the look was just spot on, incredible combination of believability and enough sci-fi to get your mind rolling.

Of course, these are just some of the cool movie gadgets that we had the pleasure of seeing in some of the finest pieces of American cinema and if I really wanted, I could have gone for pages and pages of text, but that would just be too much. This is just enough to remind you of some of the finest gadgets Hollywood has ever come up with.

For a start, since I am writing this article in June, I just had to include a little mention of the new and exciting set of speakers that come under the name ION Water Rocker. These speakers are nothing too special when it comes to their design, although they are cool looking and there is not that much that can be said about the power and the quality of the sound. However, there is something that sets them apart from pretty much all the other speakers that you can buy these days. Namely, they float and they are completely water-friendly. This means that you can bob in these wireless speakers in the pool, pour yourself a cool drink and laze the day away. A real cool summer gadget.

Another cool gadget that will come in handy in the summer that is before us is something called Aqua Force Blaster and besides a real stupid and generic name, it also has a design that would make it perfect for the oldschool American Gladiators. However, its usefulness cannot be denied. Namely, it is a water balloon launcher and as such it can and should become an inseparable part of your summer. All you need are a bunch of sexy babes in T-shirts and the summer can begin! Or handsome guys in T-shirts and linen trousers – we do not discriminate.

One of the absolutely coolest gadgets I have seen in my entire life is a replica of the Hughes/MD 500 helicopter that was done by Raffaele Iannello who came up with an insane and an insanely cool idea to attach it upside down from a ceiling. What you get this way is a fan that is extremely effective and that looks better than any other fan that has ever been designed. It is beyond cool!

As you can see, most of the gadgets I have mentioned so far have been majorly useless, with some being a bit more useful than the others, but the next one is something that is both cool and also quite useful. I am talking about an English Umbrella Seat. It is a gadget whose name tells the entire story really. It is an umbrella that can easily be converted and utilized as a seat that will support a person of up to 300 lbs. It looks great and it fulfills a number of purposes, making it the most useful gadget on this little list of mine.

And just when I thought that the cool summer gadgets category was done, I came across this gadget called Inflatable Walk on Water Mat. In short, it is a mat with a surface of 90′ sq. that can be placed anywhere on the water and which can support up to 1,000 lbs standing, sitting, lying on top of it without sinking. You can use it to turn the most boring body of water into most fun you will have this summer and what is even better, you can freak people out by pretending you are Jesus.

Also, I would like to tell you about a sort of a gadget that we are going to see in the future and that is a tattoo that indicates the blood sugar levels. It is definitely a much more convenient solution for diabetics who have to monitor their blood sugar levels and I am pretty sure that it is going to become huge once it has been completed and once it gets the FDA approval.

The first and the most popular among these are pepper sprays. Their name is somewhat benign, but believe me when I tell you that there is nothing benign about having it sprayed in your face. The effects of this spray are completely incapacitating, with the attacker not being able to ignore it, writhing with pain and unable to breathe properly. A great thing about pepper sprays is that their effects last quite long and that they will give you more than enough time to contact police or/and get away.

Stun guns may seem like an extreme solution and extreme type of self-defense gadgets, but hey, who gives a damn about someone who is attacking you, right? Stun guns work by producing just enough electricity to paralyze the assailant and make them absolutely useless for quite some time. There are a number of versions and there are even those which can be mistaken for everyday objects, which will allow you to use them even if you have lost the upper hand in a situation.

Personal alarms are somewhat underrated when it comes to self-defense gadgets as people disregard them, thinking that they are completely useless. However, they provide you with two useful effects. The first of them is that these sounds will most likely attract attention from people nearby who will come to your aid. Also, if this is not the case, they also have a huge psychological effect on the attacker who will think that someone is on their way to help you, which will in most cases make them run.

All in all, there is a lot to choose from when it comes to self defense gadgets and if you care about your safety, you should seriously consider getting one.

Namely, it is thanks to this elevated sense of paranoia and self-preservation that we have discovered a number of things that might actually be harmful for our health and that are not entirely paranoid when you look at it closer. For instance, just sixty years ago, people were puffing away, not being aware that cigarettes are harmful. We used to insulate our homes with asbestos and so on. These days, pretty much all the studies and trials that go into testing new products has to do with the safety of such products. And yet, there are certain things that you cannot avoid and also those things that are dangers which still have to be conclusively proven. The first thing that comes to mind are cell phones that are pretty much a part of everyone’s life and that can have some quite harmful effects on the human body and safety in general.

However, poking at your phones with your thumb can cause something called RSI, or repetitive stress injury that is sustained as thumbs are not supposed to be used in this repetitive and actually quite strenuous way.  And if you thought that this is where things end, you are very much mistaken. In case you didn’t know, there is also something called call phone elbow that affects certain nerves that get strained too much when holding up a phone.

Of course, we must not fail to mention the safety hazard that cell phones present when they are used while driving. The studies have shown that driving and talking at the same time is the same as driving after a couple of drinks. Texting is even worse and what is absolutely terrifying is the fact that hands free devices do very little to minimize the risks.

It goes without saying that cell phones are not the only gadgets that can pose risk to our health and safety. For instance, it is a well-known fact that using headphones with the volume turned up real high can damage the hearing and substantially so. Big flat TVs can also pose a risk, especially if there is a small child in the house which could be crushed under such a TV. Laptops are also a risk of sorts as it has been deemed that men who use them in their laps are risking their fertility due to heat.

However, in the end, it is important not to become paranoid about it all. It is a smart thing to take at least some care when using certain gadgets (cell phones while driving for instance) and not to turn into a hermit that uses nothing more advanced than a stick and a rock because they read some article where it says that their cell phone is going to fry their brain. The truth is always somewhere in the middle.
